Format:

In the first rounds (days 1 and 2) of the tournament, each player tees off once per day, alternating between morning and afternoon groups over the first two days, in randomly assigned threesomes.

In the second rounds (days 3 and 4) after 36 holes, the top 60 players are put in groups of twos to play the final 36-hole cut. The player with the lowest total score gained wins the game.

If the strokes gained lead to a tie after 72 holes, another 2-hole round happens the very next day on the same course as a play-off. If the players are still tied, a sudden-death playoff follows, and the player with the lower strokes gained takes the prize.

Players enter the tournament either as exempt players (mostly winners of golf major titles) or through local and final qualifying rounds. These are the exemption categories:

• US Open winner in the past 10 years;
• Top 10 in the previous year’s U.S Open;
• Last year’s or current amateur champion;
• Current amateur runner-up;
• Previous year’s McCormack Medal winner (amateur);

• Winner of the last three Players Championships;
• Current year’s BMW PGA Championship winner;
• Winner of the latest U.S. Senior Open;
• Top 60 in the OWGR 14 days before or on the day of the tournament;
• Winner of multiple non-opposite-field PGA Tour events, each with 500+ points;
• Gold medalist in Olympic golf (a year after);
• Qualifying players of the previous year’s Tour Championship;
• Topper of the development tour of the US PGA Tour.
