Tommy Fleetwood Finally Gets His Gong
Well, crikey, it’s about bloody time, isn’t it Tommy Fleetwood, the mop-haired legend from Southport, England, has finally cracked it big on the PGA Tour. Took him long enough. On Aug. 23, at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta – a place more humid than Darwin in February – he bagged the Tour Championship and, with it, the FedEx Cup. Talk about a ripper of a payday – $10 million bucks! Fair dinkum, that’s more cash than the pokies at Crown Casino see in a year.
From Close Calls to Sweet Victory
I’ve been watching Tommy for yonks, and let me tell you, the bloke’s had more close calls than a learner driver in Sydney traffic. You remember the Travelers back in June He had a two-shot lead with four holes to go, then played like he had a kangaroo loose in the top paddock and let it slip. And don’t even get me started on the FedEx St. Jude Championship – he was leading, then decided to play the last two holes like he was using a shovel instead of a golf club. But not this time, mate. Not at East Lake.
He went into the final round tied with Patrick Cantlay – who, honestly, looks like he’d rather be reading a spreadsheet than playing golf – and made it his own. Shot a 68 to finish three shots clear at 18-under. And when he sank that last putt, he let out a roar that probably scared the koalas back home. Absolutely magic.
Scotty Scheffler’s Wobbly Wheel
Poor Scotty Scheffler. The bloke’s been hotter than a meat pie fresh out of the servo for most of the year, but he couldn’t quite get it done at East Lake. He was trailing Tommy by four shots after three rounds and tried to make a go of it, but then he dunked one in the drink at the par-3 15th. You could almost hear the collective groan from Atlanta to Adelaide. He birdied the 16th, sure, but it was all too late. Still, finishing top 10 in 14 straight tournaments That’s better consistency than my mum’s pavlova recipe.
Fleetwood’s Steady Nerves
Now, here’s the thing that really impressed me: Tommy didn’t choke. Not once. And this is a bloke who’s had more meltdowns than an ice cream in Cairns. When he bogeyed the 10th, I thought, “Here we go again,” but nah, he came back with birdies at 12 and 13. Then on the 18th hole, with $10 million on the line, he calmly chipped out of some gnarly deep rough like he was just having a hit at the local park in Southport. Cool as a cucumber.
And you know what else His mate Justin Rose was there, filming the whole thing on his phone like a proud dad at a school recital. Blokes like that – they’re wha
